It’s been raining since couple of weeks in Denver. A Friday
evening with light rain and cold breeze! I was just back from office. I prepared
a cup of hot chai, sat on a couch and started wondering what to do. I
remembered Ghalib’s ghazal “Hazaron khwahishien aisi ki har khwahish
mein dum niklein”. Few days back
a friend and I mentioned this Ghazal in our conversation. So I looked for
Jagjit Singh’s version of this Ghazal; and then started a peaceful Ghazal ki
sham. I cannot think of a better way to spend an evening – Rain, Chai &
Ghazals.
Main nashe mein hoon; Jhuki
Jhuki Si Nazar; Hontho se chhoo lo tum; Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho; Tum Ko
Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya; Chhitti Na Koi Sandesh; Hosh Walon Ko khabar kya; Kiska
Chehra ab mai dekhun; Koi Fariyaad mere dil mein; Ishq kya hai and so on.
Sometimes, one just needs to break away from the world, and
spend some time with some soulful songs like these. They refresh your mind and
soul.
Jagjit Singhji has a voice that’s meant to touch listener’s
heart. There was a long due tribute to him that my heart wanted to give since his
death in 2011. I have written about him in my earlier post - Missing the Golden age of Ghazal & Qawwali!
As I started listening, I realized I haven’t learnt a lot about Jagjitji. So I opened Google; my good friend; and started reading about Jagjitji. I did feel bad for him when I learnt that he lost both his children way early in life; for any parent that’s an unimaginable loss. Nevertheless, I do wish that his soul rests in peace; for a person who has touched souls of millions through his voice.
