Music is Stairway to Heaven...

MUSIC -  I am sure each one of us like music, some like to listen particular genre of music, some like to listen only during particular occasion, some people like me – just love to listen to it every minute in a day. My ears are always plugged whether I am in office, or in Gym or painting or travelling. Whenever I am not with someone, I am with music.

Music is an important part of a culture, nation, people and one’s way of life. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to.

By the way, why am I here again? Why did I start with this topic? Its 1:20 PM MST on a Wednesday and I am in my office working with music on and this song starts playing “Pyar humein kis mod pe le aaya, ke dil kare haye...”. My face lightens up with a mild smile. What a relief! Imagine, when this song falls on your ears after you listen to “My name is Sheila, Sheila ki jawani, I’m too sexy for you, main tere hath na aani”; it definitely is a blessing in disguise, ufff!!

So, yeah, music more than often is pleasant. For me it’s food for my soul :-) I mean, if I have to just close my eyes and drift to a different world, it’s music of Kenny G, Yanni, Instrumentals of old hindi songs etc… If I have to cut myself from the outside world and focus on my studies or work, its Music. Music is divine, its eternal. And folks who can make such music that can touch people’s soul are really blessed.

My point is, these days I like hardly 5% of the songs released in last one decade – if I start counting they cannot be more than say 80 or 100, which is roughly 2% considering the huge volume of Bollywood movies and songs getting released every year. However, I listen without fail to Mukesh Kumar, Kishore kumar, Mohd. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, K S Sehgal, Asha Bhosale, R D Burman.

I am not saying there aren’t better collection these days. My point is even the worst song of 60’s 70’s 80's had some meaning. The music might not have worked or the composition would have been a flop. But there cannot be any comment on the lyrics or singer. But these days, only 1 out of 20 songs turns out to be with decent lyrics; beware I am saying decent not best. But you will definitely find 1 in every 5 song to be of the kind “Munni badnaam hui”, “Chikni Chameli”, “Chipka de saiyyan Fevicol se”, “Sheila ki jawaani”, “Jalebi bai” etc.. etc.. list is huge, just take a count of atleast 1 song per movie. The ones I have listed are the ones which are famous (that’s why I know it :D). And that’s why even kids of age 3 yrs know it too. Parents make them dance on such songs too, with a whole lot of pride.

I don't hate item songs, but there can still be some meaningful lyrics in such songs too. Why? Din't we have Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazar mein, Parde mein rehne do Parda na uthao, Kajra muhobbat wala akhiyon mein aise daala etc... dance numbers with beautiful lyrics? Then why are people today coming up with such pathetic lyrics is what I don't understand.

Musicians say, its because people want such music. Lyricist say movie makers ask for such songs because people love them. If it's true, then I feel sorry for the people and their degrading taste.

Gulzar ji, Javed Akhtar ji – they bring in some meaningful lyrics and depth to the songs, but they are getting old too. Someday they will stop writing and then? Prasoon Joshi, Piyush Mishra, Farhan Akhtar are some other poets whose writing I enjoy.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy, A R Rehman, Vishal –Shekhar, Mohit Chauhan, K.K, Shreya ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, Papon, Arijit Singh, Ankit Tiwari, Lucky Ali, Adnan Sami, Kaavish, Amit Trivedi, Shankar Tucker are some of the current musicians/singers I listen to.

Thanks to the Coke studio, MTV unplugged, Kappa Mojo shows that introduce us to pure music.

Well, this was a tribute to Indian music. In addition to these, I of course have a huge collection of songs from the western world. I love listening to Linkin Park, Imagine Dragons, Green day, Michael Jackson, MLTR, Nickeback, Eminem, Nelly Furtado, Megadeth, George Michael, Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Henderix, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Adele, Justin Timberlake and so on. I will write about my Favs in some other blog.

I cannot thank enough, all these people who make such music...my salute to you all!!!

It feels great to listen to some good music; hard or soft rock; good beats, some strings, some meaningful lyrics to suit the mood. It just makes the mundane day to day activities tolerable and drifts you to a different world. Music is Stairway to Heaven..and now I will listen to Led Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven...Off I roll... :)

Life... A Blank Page!

Whenever I open a notebook and come across the set of blank pages; my mind goes blank. For some reason, it always reminds me of my life. It forces me to start thinking about my life; about the past and the future. Being part of the age of computers and belonging to the IT industry, I hardly get an opportunity to actually pick a pen and write in the notebook. I write lot of blogs, poems etc… but I write them on the webpage or in Microsoft word in my laptop.  Once in a while I like to go back to traditional form of writing; using the actual pen and paper. And in last few years; I noticed that every time I try doing that for some reason the blank paper gets me all philosophical.         Although I never have that thought while opening the book; but whenever I see those blank pages; I just go blank. I always feel that my life is staring back at me with all those unanswered silenced questions, doubts, thoughts…forcing me to think – What does my lif...

Zindagi Gulzar Hai - A feast to ones eyes!

Today I am here to make a much interesting comparison of our current Indian TV industry with our neighboring country’s television industry. Interesting because I never thought I would ever engage in watching any of the Pakistan TV series/movies or listening to their music. My disinterest in Pakistan entertainment was not because of the tensed relationship with the country. But I myself am not a big fan of TV serials. The kind of drama that is filled in Indian TV Channels today is just exhausting and tiring to watch. I hardly follow any Indian TV series. When I visit home on vacation, I join my family in watching the program they watch and that’s how I keep myself updated with what is trending in the TV industry. I love listening to music and I listen to all genres of music. I did start listening to Pakistani music since last few years and have admired their music. Strings, Fuzon,  Kaavish, Jal, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Parveen Abida, Quratulain Baloch and many ...

When Life Humbles You

When you are planning life, life makes it's own plans and often takes you by surprise. Not that you grow arrogant knowingly, but we all tend to take life for granted while on our mission to success. There are often times when we oversee simpler yet most important ingredients of life. I believe that's when someone takes control of  life  to put a brake and slow you down. It has various innovative ways to slow you down. Nothing uncommon in the world, but definitely very new to you. I have always been slowed down by life, ever time I rushed through doing tens of thousands of things. Now looking back, I think once every 2-3 years, I am pulled over the freeway of life for speeding. This time it was my health. I have been an anti doctor anti hospital person despite of coming from family of doctors. I believe in home remedies. Steam will take care of my cold; drink some herbs for immunity, tolerate pain without painkillers, go to gym or running when you have headache so on and...

Don't let the tamed ones tell you how to LIVE!

I came across this image on someone’s Facebook wall; and I couldn’t resist it. It triggered various thoughts in me that I was compelled to write a blog. I spent major part of my last decade trying to get things settled in; to plan for a backup with a backup so I could do something seriously adventurous. But it was not until late last year that I realized I should no longer wait for a timeline to stabilize professionally, financially, personally to pursue my interests. I don't need to follow a linear approach.  I don't think I can ever have enough savings to quit the job and pursue hiking/travelling/painting full time (and well, I am not a lottery person either). And I don't think I want to quit the job in the first place, I want to continue supporting my needs.  One thing that I did, last few years was try and pursue my interest whenever I got a chance. But what I started doing since last 6 months is, to create those opportunities to pursue my interests; and align...

My Favorite Read - 6 - The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev (and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer)

So, now that I want to get into some serious mountaineering activities, I started with reading books on mountains. When you check for top few books on mountains the one that comes up is " Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer " followed by “  The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev" ; both based on the 1996 Everest disaster which was made quite controversial. I started with "Into Thin Air' and while I was reading, I was continuously in conflict with Jon's views. Mind you, my memory is pretty weak when it comes to remembering details of any story - whether its books or movies. I had watched few documentaries and the Everest movie based on this topic; but that was a while ago. when I started reading this book 2 weeks back, I had no background; you can say I was totally new to this story.  And yet, it was difficult for me to understand some of Jon's accusations or feelings.  But nevertheless, Jon's style of writing was amazing; he knew how to keep reader's...

Dear Dost

Dear Dost, I know you are dealing with a lot in life. A lot has happened in the past that has changed you. A lot is happening right now, that is forcing you to change. A lot of decisions you have to make that's exploding your brains.  You are multi tasking like some superhero. You have issues at home, in the family, in your personal life, that you are juggling with. You have professional problems that you are dealing with.  A lot - that's what's happening to you right now.  When I met you, I saw "a lot" has changed in you. I have changed too, and so have you. But what I could not ask you was - are you still you? I remembered Gulzar's words, written back in 1995 (atleast that's what the source says, I had listened to Jagjit Singh singing this, and it had registered in me since then).  din kuchh aise guzārtā hai koī  jaise ehsāñ utārtā hai koī  dil meñ kuchh yuuñ sambhāltā huuñ ġham  jaise zevar sambhāltā hai koī  aaina ...

Why "Wake Up Sid" movie is my favorite :)

I am very selective about the Bollywood movies that I choose to watch. I don’t like the typical commercial, masaledar movies without any storyline, characters, screenplay and acting. Most of them are ruled out just by looking at the Name of the movie, its banner, its actors and director. And some which pass these filter criteria get eliminated when I watch their trailers. Very few end up in my watch list. And some movies I end up watching forcibly with my family or friends. Wake up Sid was one such movie, that I came across because my friends chose to watch that movie over tea 4 yrs back. We never completed watching that movie; couple of them found it boring and we got deviated from watching the movie into some other matargashti . I think 2 years back, when I was finding something to watch, I picked up this movie – just because I wasn’t finding anything appealing to watch. And I simply fell in love with this movie despite of its weak story. Konkana Sen is a talented actress ...

Radha-Krishan jaisi jodi hai!! But Why?

I was with couple of my friends on a trip earlier this month, when we landed on the topic of Radha while listening to the song “ Radha on the dance floor, Radha wants to party …” from the movie Student of the Year . My friend suddenly told “ Isn’t our culture a little strange? Although Radha and Krishna were never married, every time people see a good couple they say “ RadhaKrishan jaisi Jodi hai! ”(ie. Couple like Radha-Krishna). ” For those who aren’t familiar with Hindu mythology; Radha & Krishna appear in the Dvapara Yuga which is the 3 rd out of four yugas (4 th one being Kali Yuga, the current one that we all are part of). Radha is considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and Krishna is the Eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Radha and Krishna are most popularly known and worshipped as RadhaKrishna – in one form. Radha is Krishna’s supreme beloved and his childhood friend. Acrylic Painting of Krishna with his Flute - By Me. The Lord and His consort are refe...

My shadow on the shore

I sit on the shore of the sea I feel the waves washing my feet I watch the sun turning red as it sets I hear the music of the humming breeze Crying for the ones who aren’t beside me I spent the day thinking of tomorrow Now as I sit here watching the sun set I realize what I have gained and lost The beauty of this shore just increases As the sun sets and the moon rises As the water glitters under the moonlight And my face reflects the twinkling stars I lost beautiful seconds of life Cribbing about things I can’t do anything about But these moments here, I rejoice As I smile to my shadow on the shore! (14 Oct 09- Just like that – on this gloomy morning….as I pen down my thoughts after long timeJ)
