There's a difference between the two states of being; being alone & being lonely.
I am single and have been alone in new places all by myself; with little or no acquaintances; let alone friends. When you are single, it's a common norm for rest of the world to investigate about your companionship needs. Single people are often surrounded with friends and family that give them company.
In my case, I have got used to staying alone as well. And trust me I do just fine. I do miss them but I don't get depressed or frustrated when I don't find the company of my friends or family. So I am single and alone and happy.
That said, it's not that I don't have friends or I am not social. I am very social, enjoy parties, hangout with friends when I meet them; I am not an introvert, am more of a happy go lucky kinda person.
When I say I am alone, I am in company of myself. And I have realized that I enjoy my company a lot, so I never feel lonely.
There have been many such phases in life, when I used to live with various relations, and yet would find myself lonely many times.
I think it's very difficult for people to understand and agree that a person can be alone and happy at the same time. Many feel that we fake our happiness to hide our discontentment with life.
Honestly, in today's world, you will find many like me, who want to be alone.
Alone is a state of being, it's one's physical presence. Loneliness is a state of mind and heart, it's a feeling.
They are not tied to one another. They are mutually exclusive.
Not every person under going depression is alone; and not every person living with various relationships is happy.
And not everyone can actually stay alone; they will find friends or company in some form. For instance, one of my friend says, she doesn't care if her roommate doesn't talk to her; she just hates staying alone in a house, as long as she has some human form whom she can see around she feels fine; so whenever she lands up in a new city; she posts ads for room mates and hence finds company.
To be happy alone is an art that not everyone excels in. When we are happy alone, we don't fall into unwanted or bad company; because then company and friends are purely our choices, and only the best suitable ones makes it to our league. Relationships are no longer a necessity to us.
So next time you try to show your pity or concern to someone who lives alone; take a break from that thought; it might not be necessary after all if that's the choice of the person.
