Indian Cinema Series 2 - Spy Movies - My Favorites

I am a huge Jason Bourne fan. Jason Bourne, James Bond, Ethan Hunt and so on are my favorites. So my next area to explore in Indian cinema was Spy movies; but I am hugely disappointed. We haven't had that many Spy movies in last 2-3 decades, when I searched for movies across different languages.

I am surprised, why we haven't made movies like Raazi before; and there's not many RAW agent movies out there. But anyway, here's my list that involved life of a spy.

1. Raazi - Hindi - 2018 (No Brain'er :) This tops the list)

Director - Meghna Gulzar
Highlights - Storyline & Performance. Tops my list for amazing performance and direction. No one could have done the role of Sehmat better than Alia Bhatt.

2. Goodachari - Telugu - 2018

Plot excerpt from IMDB - A young NSA agent is framed for the murder of his bosses making him realize that now his mission is darker than expected and has some personal scores to settle regarding his father's death, a former NSA agent.
Director - Sashi Kiran Tikka
Highlights - Performance. A bit commercial but has some good spy scenes.

2. Baby - Hindi - 2015

3. Vishwaroopam I - Tamil - 2013

Plot excerpt from IMDB - When a classical dancer's suspecting wife sets an investigator behind him, a series of violent events are triggered, revealing his real identity and connection to a darker world.
Director - Kamal Haasan
Highlights - And Actor is Kamal Haasan too. A good story of spy life and only one I could find that tries to match hollywood storyline (not cinematography but story), and with Rahul Bose in negative role, movie keeps you engaged.

4. Baapjanma - Marathi - 2017

Plot excerpt from IMDB - .Bhaskar Pandit is a senior citizen living only with his caretaker Mauli and his dog Tiger. His wife has passed away a few years back and he has a strained relationship with both his children. One day, while going through his journal he realizes that he has been living the exact same routine for many months.
Director - Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari
Highlights - Sachin Khedekar is my favorite actor, and this movie is an insight into how work impacts personal life for an agent. A good cast, and a relaxing movie.

5. D Day - Hindi - 2013

Plot excerpt - A team of experts dispatched to bring in The Most Wanted Man in India almost achieves the unthinkable ... until something goes horribly wrong.
Director - Nikhil Advani
Highlights - Irfaan Khan and Arjun Rampal, an amazing combo; and the way movie showed their life as spy.

6. Madras Cafe - Hindi - 2013

Plot excerpt - An Indian intelligence agent journeys to a war-torn coastal island to break a resolute rebel group and meets a passionate journalist.
Director - Shoojit Sircar
Highlights - John's performance is good. But I felt the story glorifying a politician too much so did not enjoy it much. Papon's Maula re song is another highlight.

7. 16 December - Hindi - 2002

Plot excerpt - Based on a plot to destroy the capital city of India, New Delhi with a nuclear bomb on 16 December 2001 – 30 years after the surrender of Pakistan at the end of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
Director - Mani Shankar
Highlights - Decent Spy story, a lot of drama but we don't have many choices anyway.

8. Mukhbir - Hindi - 2008

Plot excerpt - The film revolves around the life and events surrounding an Indian spy.
Director - Mani Shankar
Highlights - Sameer Dattani is of course not an actor. Movie is quite novice; but since we really don't have a huge inventory, this movie qualifies my list for a good storyline.

Celebrating the Bridge for Friends!

Just like any other bridge, this one plays a role of connecting you and me. Some are brand new, very inviting, clean and pure, presenting to be strong, yet to get exposed to the harsh reality of life. Some have weathered in many seasons, with few bars of railings missing, few broken planks, yet they stand strong, like huge metal bridges. Some are reinforced with fresh materials every few years, so we stay connected strong and safe for entire lifetime. Some are beyond repair, standing there rusty and broken. Not because it's impossible to fix the gap, but just waiting for equal support from the other side to mend it. Some were meant to serve one another just once. The need to cross that bridge never arose again, doesn't mean we don't remember how important that bridge was in our journey. To new and old, deep and shallow, strong and weak, connected and broken friendships, I am grateful to have known you one way or another. Happy Friendships Day! 🍻

Alaska Diaries - Innocence is Fearless

Innocence is fearless. Innocence is free from consciousness of how it gets perceived. Innocence just acts, reacts at free will. On the Denali National park bus, there was a 6 year old boy, Matt. While driving in the park, there were couple of folks riding the bike, and the guide made a comment " We call them Meals on the Wheels! " ; we all giggled, smiled for 2 secs ; like we did on most of his jokes; and got back to the normal serious self. After almost a minute or two, this kid started laughing out loud. And he told his mom " Oh.. Now I got the joke. Oh that's so Funny. Hahaha.. Meals on the Wheels!! " and he was laughing his heart out. He was the only one in the bus laughing but that dint stop him from doing so. For a full 8-10 mins, he went on and on , reminding himself of that phrase and laughing. I laughed for 4-5 mins with him just because of the way of his laughter; I couldn't control. This happened in the morning; but now on the way...

Whose purpose is more meaningful?

Who sets guidelines or standards for an acceptable purpose of life? Some are fighters whose ultimate purpose is to fight; for environment, for nation, for religion, for women, for sick, for poor, for justice, for universe etc..etc.. (doctors, lawyers, politicians, NGOs, environmentalists, socialists, defense forces, civil forces, economists, saints, monks,etc..). Some are creators whose purpose is to create that one masterpiece for the world (people like writers, musicians, artists, composers, scientists, researchers, innovators, farmers, influencers, engineers, chefs, designers, architects etc..etc..). Then comes the category of skill or hobby loving folks who find purpose of life in their skills or passion like acting, teaching, singing, climbing, mountaineering, sports etc... But all these together form just 5-10% of the society. The major part of this world don't have any said purpose. Not everyone's ultimate purpose is to save the world. Rest of this world lead...

Listener of the Fallen Stars

SriLanka Backpacking Itinerary - 14 days - One Country - Many Experiences

Finally, I tried to put together the itinerary of the 14 days backpacking trip in SriLanka I did with a friend in December 2019. Some general notes - For accommodation, we used Hostelworld.com ; Booking.com ; Airbnb.ca On an average $7 - $15 USD we get good accommodation in hostel/airbnb. Coconut water - 80 LKR (because I drank a lot of it :)) TukTuk - always suggest you check with locals on what's the average price, so you can negotiate with the drivers better. Bus & train - most preferred mode of transportation, cheap, depending on the time of the day there are chance of it being crowded, but hey - if you want to get the sense of the place and people, go for it. In the expenses I have not included accommodation or food or rides within city. Used Splitwise app to track my daily expenses. My Favorite Read - 11 - City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

An absolutely delicious novel of which I savoured every single page. After "A man called Ove by Fredrick Backman", this is the first time that I could not stop smiling throughout my read, and trust me you don't get to experience that quite often. So, thank you Elizabeth Gilbert for such an entertaining novel. Vivian moris is the woman I fell in love with along with dozen other characters. Such a colorful novel, and the casual manner in which it's delivered, did the perfect trick. Okay, let me back up a bit. Starting with Vivian's entry into New York back in 1940s, this is how she explains it to Angela, " But this is a city that gets born anew in the fresh eyes of every young person who arrives here for the first time.
