About Time.

“Is this your story?” She asked placing the manuscript on the coffee table and lighting her cigarette.

“Does it matter?” He said looking out of the patio, sipping his whiskey.

“Maybe. Maybe not. Question is, why are you afraid of confessing the truth?” She said with a mocking smile.

“You have always been one nasty little bitch.” he said taking the cigarette from her and smoking a puff.

“Yup when it comes to you, I am. Don’t change the topic.”

“Oh come on.” He said grunting and shifting in his chair.

“So, it is your story then.” She said taking the cigarette back.

“Don’t you know by now, that we writers are scavengers. We feed off of our emotions and others alike. Every story we write has a glimpse of our soul.” he said making dramatic gestures.

“No no no no, don’t give me your writer’s BS. What if she reads it?” She said shaking her head.

“Hmmm” he hummed staring at the sunset on the highway. His apartment was on 22nd floor, with the view of freeway to the right and open space in the front with no buildings blocking the view.

“Alex? You know she will.” She said in a concerned tone.

“Well good, that would add one more fan to my fan base.” He said still looking at the far horizon

“Okay, now I am sure of it. You want her to read it, don’t you. But Why? Why after all these years?” She asked bending forward and placing her hand on his knees.

“And you don’t give up, do you?” he smiled looking at her and continued “I don’t know Addy. I don’t know what I was thinking, or why I chose to write about this. I don’t know.”

“Well, you better start knowing soon. I have seen you struggle through those years, and it wasn’t easy. I just want to make sure you know what you are getting into. You won’t be able to dodge questions from public with I don’t knows.“ she said leaning back on her chair.

Adrianna and Alexander had met 5 years back in a writers conference. She was an editor in a publishing house and he was a struggling writer.  Their eyes had met from across the room and it felt like they knew each other forever. She had walked into his life few days after his break up. If it weren’t for her, he would have drowned himself so deep in his mess that coming out of it would have been impossible. But she helped him find a balance between his sadness and their friendship. They were good friends, in fact the best they could be.

She had helped him channel his grief, frustration, anger - all those emotions into writing, and his first book was published 2 years later which was decently successful. 2 sequels were published in the following 2 years, and he had gained a fairly good fanbase.

This was the manuscript of his new novel which was a different genre from his previous novels. And as always, she was the first one to read the draft.

“Addy, you know the saddest truth is, no matter how hard we try, we can never forget our first love.” he said with soft eyes.

“Hah. Yeah, tell me about it. And most of us get our hearts broken even before we care to understand love.” She said refilling her glass with whiskey.

“You know, to be honest, I don’t know when bits and pieces of my story crept into this novel. And before I realized I was already more than half way through it. I thought of scrapping the whole story and starting something fresh.” he said looking at his manuscript on the table.

“And?” she asked.

“I spent a whole night thinking about it. Then I decided against it. I thought, why should I be scared to throw my raw emotions out there? I think being naked is the only way to accept who I am and truly move on. I don’t know if I can move on or not after this, but it definitely feels a lot better to get some of this off my chest. You have no idea how light I feel. For the first time in 5 years, I feel I have truly made peace with my past.”

“Good. Am glad to hear that. It was about time.” She said smilingly.

For Addy, Alex was that person who had crept in through the cracks of the wall she had built around her heart. She was at ease with him from the first day and that rarely happened. For her to open up and be herself with him was the biggest gift she ever got in years. She held him very dear to her heart and she knew that he did the same for her.

“You think?” He looked at her with a surprised look. For all the years he had known her, she wasn’t the one to express her emotions easily.

“Of course. I thought your first novel would be this. But it wasn't and I did not want to push it, nor did I want to manipulate you. I knew that you would confront your emotions and someday you would be ready to write about it. I was just hoping that I was there when you did that.“ She said  with a subtle hint of excitement in her voice.

“So?You liked it?” he asked fixing his gaze on her.

“You know that I pick nothing but the best. I will submit this to the team tomorrow.” she said with a smile.

“Addy,..” he started wanting to say how thankful he was to have her in his life.

But before he could say anything she said “I know Alex.” He understood that he did not have to say anything else.

They sat in the patio watching the night sky, feeling the cool breeze and enjoying their drinks.

Life... A Blank Page!

Whenever I open a notebook and come across the set of blank pages; my mind goes blank. For some reason, it always reminds me of my life. It forces me to start thinking about my life; about the past and the future. Being part of the age of computers and belonging to the IT industry, I hardly get an opportunity to actually pick a pen and write in the notebook. I write lot of blogs, poems etc… but I write them on the webpage or in Microsoft word in my laptop.  Once in a while I like to go back to traditional form of writing; using the actual pen and paper. And in last few years; I noticed that every time I try doing that for some reason the blank paper gets me all philosophical.         Although I never have that thought while opening the book; but whenever I see those blank pages; I just go blank. I always feel that my life is staring back at me with all those unanswered silenced questions, doubts, thoughts…forcing me to think – What does my lif...

Ahamasmi Yodha - My First Tattoo

But I dint have that privilege. So I went through lot of blogs and articles in About.com, Wikihow, YahooAnswers etc… Well Google, the new lord of knowledge :) has all that you need to know. So, in summary, what I got from all these sites were First decide on what you want to get tattooed and where. Go over it again and again, since it is permanent, you will have to live ...

When Life Humbles You

When you are planning life, life makes it's own plans and often takes you by surprise. Not that you grow arrogant knowingly, but we all tend to take life for granted while on our mission to success. There are often times when we oversee simpler yet most important ingredients of life. I believe that's when someone takes control of  life  to put a brake and slow you down. It has various innovative ways to slow you down. Nothing uncommon in the world, but definitely very new to you. I have always been slowed down by life, ever time I rushed through doing tens of thousands of things. Now looking back, I think once every 2-3 years, I am pulled over the freeway of life for speeding. This time it was my health. I have been an anti doctor anti hospital person despite of coming from family of doctors. I believe in home remedies. Steam will take care of my cold; drink some herbs for immunity, tolerate pain without painkillers, go to gym or running when you have headache so on and...

My Favorite Read - 6 - The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev (and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer)

So, now that I want to get into some serious mountaineering activities, I started with reading books on mountains. When you check for top few books on mountains the one that comes up is " Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer " followed by “  The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev" ; both based on the 1996 Everest disaster which was made quite controversial. I started with "Into Thin Air' and while I was reading, I was continuously in conflict with Jon's views. Mind you, my memory is pretty weak when it comes to remembering details of any story - whether its books or movies. I had watched few documentaries and the Everest movie based on this topic; but that was a while ago. when I started reading this book 2 weeks back, I had no background; you can say I was totally new to this story.  And yet, it was difficult for me to understand some of Jon's accusations or feelings.  But nevertheless, Jon's style of writing was amazing; he knew how to keep reader's...

Don't let the tamed ones tell you how to LIVE!

I came across this image on someone’s Facebook wall; and I couldn’t resist it. It triggered various thoughts in me that I was compelled to write a blog. I spent major part of my last decade trying to get things settled in; to plan for a backup with a backup so I could do something seriously adventurous. But it was not until late last year that I realized I should no longer wait for a timeline to stabilize professionally, financially, personally to pursue my interests. I don't need to follow a linear approach.  I don't think I can ever have enough savings to quit the job and pursue hiking/travelling/painting full time (and well, I am not a lottery person either). And I don't think I want to quit the job in the first place, I want to continue supporting my needs.  One thing that I did, last few years was try and pursue my interest whenever I got a chance. But what I started doing since last 6 months is, to create those opportunities to pursue my interests; and align...

Zindagi Gulzar Hai - A feast to ones eyes!

Today I am here to make a much interesting comparison of our current Indian TV industry with our neighboring country’s television industry. Interesting because I never thought I would ever engage in watching any of the Pakistan TV series/movies or listening to their music. My disinterest in Pakistan entertainment was not because of the tensed relationship with the country. But I myself am not a big fan of TV serials. The kind of drama that is filled in Indian TV Channels today is just exhausting and tiring to watch. I hardly follow any Indian TV series. When I visit home on vacation, I join my family in watching the program they watch and that’s how I keep myself updated with what is trending in the TV industry. I love listening to music and I listen to all genres of music. I did start listening to Pakistani music since last few years and have admired their music. Strings, Fuzon,  Kaavish, Jal, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Parveen Abida, Quratulain Baloch and many ...

Why "Wake Up Sid" movie is my favorite :)

I am very selective about the Bollywood movies that I choose to watch. I don’t like the typical commercial, masaledar movies without any storyline, characters, screenplay and acting. Most of them are ruled out just by looking at the Name of the movie, its banner, its actors and director. And some which pass these filter criteria get eliminated when I watch their trailers. Very few end up in my watch list. And some movies I end up watching forcibly with my family or friends. Wake up Sid was one such movie, that I came across because my friends chose to watch that movie over tea 4 yrs back. We never completed watching that movie; couple of them found it boring and we got deviated from watching the movie into some other matargashti . I think 2 years back, when I was finding something to watch, I picked up this movie – just because I wasn’t finding anything appealing to watch. And I simply fell in love with this movie despite of its weak story. Konkana Sen is a talented actress ...

Celebrating the Bridge for Friends!

Just like any other bridge, this one plays a role of connecting you and me. Some are brand new, very inviting, clean and pure, presenting to be strong, yet to get exposed to the harsh reality of life. Some have weathered in many seasons, with few bars of railings missing, few broken planks, yet they stand strong, like huge metal bridges.  Some are reinforced with fresh materials every few years, so we stay connected strong and safe for entire lifetime.  Some are beyond repair, standing there rusty and broken. Not because it's impossible to fix the gap, but just waiting for equal support from the other side to mend it. Some were meant to serve one another just once. The need to cross that bridge never arose again, doesn't mean we don't remember how important that bridge was in our journey. To new and old, deep and shallow, strong and weak, connected and broken friendships, I am grateful to have known you one way or another.  Happy Friendships Day! 🍻

Dandelion Shares My Thoughts!

Been a while.   Not because my life stopped being interesting. But because I stopped listening. Somewhere between me running my life and life running me around, I lost track of stillness.  There’s this weird sense of not belonging to a place or time. I know with every passing second, a part of me is getting lost to the past; like this dandelion, loosing a part of itself to the wind. (Clicked this pic during my walk earlier this week). It’s not about growing old or fighting the battle against time. It’s just…I know I always advocate the sense of contentment. But being content also makes you lose sight of future. I am always present, always immersed in what’s at hand which works really well; until I stop and lift my head to look around, and all of a sudden I feel like a lost kid in a crowded fair.  There’s this sense of uneasiness, like everyone’s headed somewhere and I am just aimlessly floating away. It’s kind of what people call existential crisis, which generally is tri...

Compliment Someone, Because, Why Not?

Last week a customer service lady at self-checkout area of Loblaws walked up to me and asked if I was at the store the previous day. I indeed was.  I was surprised she remembered me, and was also confused as to why would it matter if I showed up on consecutive days. You know how at times your brain goes a million miles per sec and causes you to question all your life choices? I was running all the reasons in my head as to why someone would care about my grocery schedule. So, it was in that slightly confused state I replied, albeit politely “ Yes, I was here yesterday. The huge watermelon I bought did not allow me to complete my entire grocery checklist as I had reached my single trip haul limit, so I am here again to buy rest of my items ”. Meanwhile, my inner voice was shouting “ Why are you justifying your grocery trip to this random lady? Like who cares? ” Me being me, where my face clear as water always shows what I feel inside; she must have seen that confusion clearly danci...
