This thought (of what defines a good human being?) has come and gone in my head millions or zillions of time till now; so I thought I must write a summary about it.
My mom keeps referring to a relative as "You know, he is a good human being. Today he might not be saying/doing xyz; but he is good at heart".
My friend refers to another friend as "Well, no matter what he does, deep down he is a good person."
I have come across many such references; and I have argued about it as well. As I sit today thinking about it, I wanted to write down, on what really defines good human being;and that people are just over taxing that word using it where it does not really belong.
Here's my thought.
Being a silent person, not reacting to situations where required, staying low or out of 'trouble', one whose actions are controlled by someone or something else - DOES NOT mean he/she is a good person. It just means he is a normal human being.
Being a so called Good human being is not easy. It requires a lot of courage in today's world. It means standing your ground on what you believe in. It means fighting for goodness in this society. It means standing against your loved ones also at times. It means standing alone with maybe entire world against you; but you still stand there with your shoulders straight, chest stretched out and head held high; saying you believe in the goodness of your actions. You don't lose faith in what you believe. You don't believe in normalcy. You don't follow the crowd to say. You believe in doing what is right not what makes others happy. It's not just the selfless charity acts, it's much more than that, it's about valued principles that you try to hold up against all odds.
Being a good human comes with a huge responsibility. It doesn't always mean keeping people around you happy. It means fighting what is wrong; not closing your eyes to wrongdoings around you; to raise your voice against the wrong even if it is not really related to you.
Deep down - Every single soul in this world is a good human being. Even a criminal is born a good human, so deep down, he too is good. Goodness is not what lies deep within you as everyone say. But per me, it is bringing it in your habits, in your personality, showing it out to the world. Faking the rules of goodness of this society by throwing out some charity funds, working in NGOs once in a while does not make us a good human. It just makes us a normal human - neither good nor bad. And really most of us are normal humans; nothing wrong with it, we just need to accept it.
Goodness is an act of nobility without any expectation. They don't even expect applause from the people around on their actions. It's their second nature, to act as such at will. It's not that they are selfless. I feel, a good human is the most selfish person, because they are serving their own soul, their actions give them immense pleasure/ pure-happiness.
So really, don't over tax the word Good person. There are very few people who are brave enough to be a good human, let's respect them.
